Hobonichi Cousin Unsodo: Shin-Bijutsukai (Flower) A5 April Start – A Century of Japanese Design

A Historic Woodblock Pattern Reimagined

From the artistic heritage of Hobonichi and Kyoto publisher Unsodo comes Shin-Bijutsukai (Flower) – Cousin A5 (April Start), a cover inspired by a craft design from the historic Shin-Bijutsukai collection. These design books, published during Japan’s Meiji period (1868–1912), showcased intricate patterns created by skilled painters and designers using traditional woodblock printing.

This cover features large peony-like flowers arranged over a lattice background in calming tones of blue, light blue, and brown. The layered horizontal and vertical lines create a sense of depth, giving the design a tile-like or stained-glass appearance. Though the flowers are softly colored and without outlines, they stand out boldly, making the composition feel both classic and surprisingly modern.
